Load and System Data Come Before Equipment Selection
Service size should not be selected from a rough equipment count or an assumed rule of thumb. Voltage and phase must match the planned equipment, and future capacity should be deliberate rather than an undefined allowance.

Separate Utility Work From Customer-Owned Electrical Work
The electric utility controls its service requirements, application process, metering rules, available voltage, connection point, scheduling, and the work it owns. The property owner or designated project party should submit required information early and keep the utility’s written requirements with the project documents.
Customer-side work may include service entrance conductors, raceways, meter equipment when assigned to the customer, service disconnecting means, grounding and bonding, distribution equipment, pads or supports, labeling, and coordination for inspections. The exact ownership boundary varies by utility and project. Civil work, trenching, bollards, concrete, easements, traffic control, and restoration should be assigned in writing.
Plan the Location for Operation and Maintenance
Service and distribution equipment needs safe, code-compliant access and working space. The location should account for utility access, doors, vehicle traffic, stored materials, piping, drainage, weather, security, future maintenance, and the ability to replace equipment. An equipment room cannot become a storage closet after turnover, and outdoor gear needs appropriate environmental and physical protection.
If the project also serves a renovation or new tenant layout, coordinate the service work with commercial build-out and remodel wiring. That keeps the incoming capacity, downstream distribution, equipment loads, and construction schedule connected.
Coordinate the Shutdown, Inspection, and Energization Sequence
Replacing an active service can interrupt the entire property. The team should identify critical loads, occupied areas, refrigeration, communications, security, life-safety interfaces, generator connections, and equipment that requires an orderly shutdown or restart. Temporary power may help selected loads, but it is a separate engineered and operational plan—not an assumption that every system will stay online.
The sequence may include utility disconnection, make-safe work, removal, installation, grounding and bonding, equipment testing, local inspection, correction items, release to the utility, meter installation, energization, and verification of downstream systems. Each dependency needs an owner, and the final date remains subject to the utility and inspection authorities.
Properties that cannot tolerate extended outages can also review commercial backup power and continuity planning. Backup systems do not eliminate the need for a controlled service shutdown, but they may support defined critical loads when properly designed and maintained.
Finish With Accurate Identification and a Usable System
After energization, service disconnects, meters, panels, feeders, and circuits should be identified within the project scope. Required field markings, directories, settings, test records, and approved documentation should be delivered to the responsible party. Temporary labels and outdated directories should not become the permanent operating record.
