That keeps a small generator from being assigned more than it can reasonably supply. It also avoids paying for a connection strategy that does not match how the home will use backup power.

A portable-generator hookup commonly uses an exterior inlet and approved transfer equipment. This lets selected home circuits receive power without running cords through doors or windows. The homeowner still follows the generator manufacturer’s startup, connection, loading, shutdown, cooling, and storage instructions each time the unit is used.

A standby generator is a permanently installed system that may start automatically and transfer selected loads or a managed portion of the home. Its electrical design must coordinate with the generator rating, transfer equipment, service, and panel. Control wiring, grounding and bonding, and any load-management equipment must also fit the design. Generator placement and fuel work must be completed by the appropriate qualified parties.

Generator Safety Is Part of the Design

Never try to energize house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall, range, or dryer receptacle. That practice can backfeed the electrical system, bypass intended safeguards, and expose occupants, neighbors, and utility workers to dangerous voltage. A generator connected to a home’s wiring needs properly installed transfer equipment. This prevents the utility and generator sources from being connected together unintentionally.

Portable generators create deadly carbon monoxide. Operate a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the home, with the exhaust directed away from windows, doors, vents, and other openings. Never run one in a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area, even with doors open. Maintain working carbon-monoxide alarms, keep the generator dry without enclosing it, and let it cool before refueling. Always follow the generator manufacturer’s instructions.

If a generator is connected through a homemade cord, an improvised receptacle, exposed conductors, or equipment that does not positively separate power sources, stop using it. Have the arrangement evaluated. Do not open the panel or try to build an interlock or transfer connection yourself.
